Italy was plunged into political chaos last night with the hard right poised to win power after the prime minister Mario Draghi resigned and parliament was dissolved.
The premature fall of Mario Draghi’s government threatens to unravel Europe’s united front against President Putin, with one potential successor having expressed sympathy in the past for the Kremlin and the other an old ally of Viktor Orban, the populist prime minister of Hungary. The collapse triggered snap elections, scheduled for September 25.
